If you want to kick off your range day or dry fire session with energy and focus, the Double Dash Shooting Drill is the perfect way to get started. This straightforward warm-up drill helps you build rhythm, accuracy, and smooth transitions right from the beginning of your training. By combining quick double shots with reloads and target transitions, the Double Dash gets your mind and body prepared for more advanced drills.
You can run this drill from either your holster or a low ready position. Using a target with heart shapes, follow the two strings below:
String 1: Draw and fire two shots on the middle heart, then one shot on all remaining hearts.
String 2: Draw and fire one shot on each heart, perform a reload, then fire one more shot on each heart.
This combination challenges your ability to switch between controlled pairs and single, precise shots, while also reinforcing smooth reloads under light pressure.
The Double Dash is effective because it balances two critical skills: speed and precision. The first string teaches you to deliver fast, accurate pairs before transitioning to other targets. The second string builds reload confidence, especially when combined with magazine pouches or gear you’d use during defensive or competition shooting.
By warming up with this drill, you set the tone for your entire practice session. It gets your grip, stance, and sight alignment locked in early, so every drill afterward feels sharper.
If you’re running the Double Dash as a dry fire practice, confirm your firearm is unloaded, magazines are empty, and all live ammo is stored in another room. For live fire at the range, remember to bring reliable eye and ear protection to keep your training safe and focused.
The Double Dash is also easy to scale. Beginners can run the drill slowly, focusing on accuracy. More advanced shooters can add a timer to measure progress, or increase distance to make each shot more challenging. Pairing it with a supportive shooting belt and holster setup creates a more realistic training environment.
Over time, repeating the Double Dash will help you build smoother draws, quicker reloads, and a consistent rhythm that carries into every other drill you practice.
