The Fast Track Shooting Drill is a straightforward yet challenging exercise that helps shooters improve both accuracy and timing. Designed to incorporate draws, reloads, and controlled multi-shot sequences, it’s a valuable addition to any range day or dry fire routine. By working through this drill regularly, you’ll develop smoother weapon handling, faster reloads, and greater confidence under pressure.
The drill can be run from either the holster or a low ready position, depending on your experience and comfort level. Using the designated numbered target, here’s how to perform the two strings:
String 1: Draw and fire one shot on targets 1–3. Perform a reload, then fire two shots on targets 4–5.
String 2: Draw and fire two shots on targets 1–3. Perform a reload, then fire three shots on targets 4–5.
This setup forces you to transition quickly between targets, manage recoil during multi-shot strings, and execute reloads efficiently. The drill challenges you to keep your accuracy consistent even as the pace increases.
If you’re performing this drill during a dry fire session, make absolutely sure your gun is unloaded. Double check that no live ammunition is in your firearm, magazines, or anywhere in the room. For live fire at the range, always use eye and ear protection to keep yourself safe while training.
A secure holster is also critical, especially when practicing from the draw. The holster should provide retention, allow a smooth draw stroke, and support consistent reholstering.
What sets the Fast Track drill apart is its balance of precision and pressure. You aren’t simply firing shots in a row — you’re incorporating reloads, multiple target transitions, and controlled bursts of fire. This builds:
Reload efficiency: Practicing reloads under time pressure makes them second nature.

Because the strings are short, you can repeat the drill multiple times in a single session without burning through a lot of ammo.
This drill is excellent for dry fire training, which lets you refine your skills without live ammunition. Use tools like snap caps or dummy rounds for added realism. Practicing reloads during dry fire will sharpen your muscle memory so that your live fire reloads feel smooth and automatic. Pair this with a supportive shooting belt to carry holsters and pouches comfortably.
